My dad has passed away. I've been working through what I wanted to say at his service. Here's what I've got.
We are here today to morn the loss of of my father and remember him for what he was. He was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, and a friend.
But instead of going on about what he was, I would like to focus a bit on what he is. This man lived a life, and what a life it was. He was a body man at a very young age, a racecar driver, a Marine, a pilot, a motorcycle racer, and a scuba diver.
He was a racecar driver again, and he rode bicycles. Most notably, he rode the Hotter-N-Hell 100 three times. He had a very technical mind. As a instrument tech and a systems analyst, i listened to him, on the phone, run from one end of whatever system he was talking about to the other until he lead the person on the other end to their problem.
Now I know I said I wasn't going to go on about what he was, but I'm getting to it. During my mother's service I said If I could describe her in one word, it'd be "unique". Because she saw and lived life in her own way, and my dad did the exact, same, thing.
I think it's that unusual and rare kinship that created the bond that made their marriage last more than fifty years.
So if I had to describe my dad in one word? Legend. And that is what he is.
Now everyone here that knew him, think. We all have at least one story that's amazing, or hilarious, or both. Legend. And today, we should not be mourning a loss, but celebrating a win.
